Autism is a spectrum condition and a hidden disability, so it is not always easy for neurotypical people to understand how autistic people experience and navigate the world. This talk aims to provide a brief introduction to autism, identify the strengths of autistic people as well as the challenges they face in everyday life and will conclude with offering some ways forward in how we can make our world more autism-friendly. Dr Jacqui Shepherd is an honorary Senior Lecturer in Inclusive Education at the University of Sussex, co-director of the Autism Community Research Network (ACORNS) and also works on international disability inclusion projects for Sightsavers International. She was responsible for training primary and secondary teachers in special needs and inclusion at Sussex and her PhD was on autism and transition. Jacqui also has 20 years lived experience with her son who has autism and learning disabilities.
